Indian Railways is set to create history by launching the country's first indigenous hydrogen-powered passenger train on July 17. The train will mark a major step towards cleaner and more environmentally friendly railway transportation in India. It is expected to be flagged off from Jind railway station in Haryana and will run on the Jind-Sonipat route under the Northern Railway zone.

First Hydrogen-Powered Train to be Launched
The launch has generated excitement among railway enthusiasts and passengers as it introduces a new generation of train technology. Unlike conventional diesel-powered trains, this train will use hydrogen fuel cells for propulsion. The technology produces only water vapour and heat as by-products, making the train completely free from harmful emissions and helping reduce pollution.
The hydrogen train project was approved by the Ministry of Railways in May 2026 as part of Indian Railways' efforts to adopt green and sustainable transport solutions. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Railway Board has approved the operation of a 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell train powered by a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen propulsion system. This makes it one of the most advanced railway projects undertaken in the country.
The train will have a maximum operating speed of 75 kmph, making it suitable for passenger services on the selected route. While it may not be among the fastest trains in the country, its main focus is to demonstrate clean energy technology and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
The PIB described the project as a major milestone in Indian Railways' efforts to develop greener, cleaner and more energy-efficient rail operations. The successful introduction of the hydrogen-powered train is expected to pave the way for similar eco-friendly trains on other routes in the future.
The launch also highlights India's growing focus on sustainable transportation and modern railway technology. If the project proves successful, hydrogen-powered trains could gradually replace diesel trains on selected routes, reducing carbon emissions and supporting the country's environmental goals. The new train is expected to offer passengers a quieter, cleaner and more sustainable travel experience while showcasing India's progress in adopting advanced railway technology.
