Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Vande Bharat Express to Kashmir on April 19. This new train service will finally connect Udhampur, Srinagar, and Baramulla with the rest of India, fulfilling a long-awaited dream. It marks the completion of a crucial 272-km railway stretch, making travel to the region easier and faster. The launch event will take place at Katra railway station, where the Prime Minister will also address a public gathering.

Bridging a 70-Year Gap
For decades, Kashmir lacked a direct train connection to other parts of India. Until now, train services only operated between Sangaldan and Baramulla within the Valley, while another service connected Katra to other parts of the country. The new Vande Bharat Express will now offer seamless travel between Katra and Srinagar, finally closing this gap. The railway safety department approved the new route after successful trial runs, ensuring that the service meets all safety standards.
One Train to Start, More to Follow
Initially, only one Vande Bharat Express will run between Katra and Srinagar. The government will monitor passenger response before deciding whether to introduce more trains on this route. Officials believe that if demand increases, additional services may be added in the future to improve connectivity further.
Strict Security Measures for Safe Travel
Since this route passes through sensitive areas, strict security checks will be in place for all passengers. Travelers heading to Srinagar from Delhi or any other location will have to undergo additional screening at Katra station before continuing their journey. The security process includes:
- Luggage scanning at the boarding station
- Additional screening at Katra's departure lounge
- Final security check before boarding the train to Srinagar
These steps have been introduced to ensure the safety of all passengers and to maintain security along this important railway route.
Daytime Operations for Security Reasons
To further enhance passenger safety, the train will operate only during daylight hours. Authorities have decided against nighttime travel due to security concerns in the region. This schedule ensures that passengers can travel safely while security forces monitor the route effectively during the day.
The launch of the Vande Bharat Express in Kashmir is a significant step towards improving transportation in the region. This new train service will not only boost tourism but also strengthen ties between Kashmir and the rest of India. With strong security measures in place and careful planning, the train is expected to provide a safe and comfortable journey for passengers. The successful completion of this project marks a new chapter in India's railway history and promises a brighter future for travel in the region.
