Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar's recent social media post created some confusion about when Bengaluru's Namma Metro Pink Line will open. He stated that the full 21.26-km line would be ready by May 2026. However, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has clarified that the project will open

in two phases.
First phase of Bengaluru Metro
The first phase, a 7.5-km elevated stretch between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere, is expected to start operations by May 2026. This section runs entirely along Bannerghatta Road and includes six stations: Tavarekere, Jayadeva Hospital, JP Nagar 4th Phase, IIMB, Hulimavu, and Kalena Agrahara. The Jayadeva Hospital station will be the tallest in South India and an important interchange for metro commuters.
Second Phase of Bengaluru Metro
The second phase covers a 13.76-km underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagavara, which is likely to open by December 2026. Although tunnelling was completed in December 2024, work on systems and interiors continues. This stretch will include 12 stations and another interchange at MG Road, making it the city's fourth.
Additional Ongoing Works
Civil and track works between Dairy Circle and Shivajinagar are almost complete, and BMRCL is now focusing on installing key systems like ventilation, signalling, fire safety, and automatic fare collection gates. At MG Road, a prototype of the full-height Platform Screen Doors has already been installed. On the Cantonment-Nagavara side, tracks have reached Venkateshpura, and station work is nearly 95% complete, with lifts and escalators in place. Moreover, finishing work such as ceilings and flooring will follow soon.
BMRCL is also expecting the prototype of the driverless train from BEML by the end of November 2025, which will undergo tests at the Kothanur depot before trial runs begin. Moreover, a total of 23 trains will serve the Pink Line once fully operational.
