Exciting News: Mathigodu Elephant Camp In Karnataka Is Now Open For Tourists

Exciting news for nature enthusiasts and elephant lovers! Mathigodu Elephant Camp near Thithimathi in the Kodagu district of Karnataka is now open for tourists. Previously limited to rearing and taming elephants, this camp has transformed into a captivating tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of these majestic creatures.

Mathigodu Elephant Camp gained prominence for sheltering elephants invited during the Dasara celebrations in Mysuru city. Notably, Abhimanyu, one of the elephants from this camp, led the Dasara procession in 2022, carrying the 750 kg Golden Howdah alongside two female elephants. Additionally, Arjuna, the eldest elephant during the festivities, also hailed from Mathigodu Elephant Camp.

Developed at a cost of Rs 1 crore by the state government, the camp boasts 17 domesticated elephants, along with essential facilities such as elephant shelters, feeding stations, parking areas, and an information center. Tourists now have the opportunity to observe the elephants' daily routines up close, gaining insight into their behavior and habitat.

However, the camp has faced challenges, including the loss of some elephants due to age-related ailments and accidents. Last year, Subramani, a 50-year-old elephant undergoing training at the camp, succumbed to illness, highlighting the need for enhanced veterinary care and conservation efforts.

Similar to the renowned Dubare Elephant Camp in Coorg, Mathigodu Elephant Camp offers visitors an immersive experience of the world of elephants. At Dubare, tourists can witness elephants bathing in the river, participate in rituals like oil massages, and observe tusker grooming activities. Additionally, mahouts demonstrate how elephants respond to commands, providing insights into their training and behavior.
