Border Roads Organisation Breaks Record with World's Highest Motorable Road Construction
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is on the brink of achieving another remarkable feat in the field of road construction. On the 77th Independence Day of India, the BRO embarked on an ambitious venture: the construction of the world's highest motorable road. This groundbreaking project, the Likaru-Migla-Fukche road near Hanle in Eastern Ladakh, is set to surpass the BRO's previous accomplishment and elevate connectivity to new heights.
Connecting Distant Lands: A Road to Unite
The proposed 64-kilometer-long road is slated to connect Likaru and Fukche, two significant locations situated in the heart of Eastern Ladakh. The new motorable pass is poised to set a record by existing at an astonishing altitude of 19,400 feet. This surpasses the previous record set by the Umling La pass, constructed at 19,024 feet by the BRO in 2021.
Umling La's Triumph
Notably, the Umling La pass not only claimed the title of the world's highest motorable pass but also etched its name in the Guinness Book of World Records. By exceeding the elevation of Bolivia's Uturuncu volcano road, which stands at 18,953 feet, Umling La demonstrated the BRO's prowess in crafting pathways to the skies. This pass serves as a crucial link, connecting Chishumle to Demchok, two points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and a contentious region between India and China.
A New Milestone: Likaru-Migla-Fukche Road
The Likaru-Migla-Fukche road, spanning 64 kilometers, aims to connect Hanle to the CDFD road at Fukche. One of the most noteworthy aspects of this project is its strategic significance, as it passes through Migla at an astonishing altitude of 19,400 feet. The budget allocated for this ambitious endeavor amounts to approximately 520 Crores Rupees. Furthermore, this project holds an additional historic distinction - it is the first project in India to be carried out entirely by an All Woman Road Construction Company.
Women Powering Change: All Woman Border Road Task Force
Leading the way in this revolutionary project is the five-member All Woman Border Road Task Force. Commanded by Col. Ponung Doming of the Engineers Corps of the Indian Army, this dedicated team is part of the BRO's All Women BRTF. Situated at an extreme altitude above 19,000 feet, this BRTF navigates through conditions marked by temperatures that range between -50°C and -20°C year-round. The women of the task force are truly making history, demonstrating their capabilities in one of the world's most challenging terrains.

The BRO has been relentless in its pursuit of providing improved accessibility to the armed forces deployed near the LAC. This commitment is evident in their creation of a comprehensive network of roads and bridges covering a staggering 32,000 kilometers over the past three years.
