Good news for people travelling from Gurugram, Sohna, and Jaipur to Delhi Airport - a new 2.5-kilometre tunnel on the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway is ready and will open on 29 May. This tunnel is expected to make travel quicker and easier, especially during the busy afternoon hours.

Tunnel to Open for Three Hours Daily
The new tunnel will be open every day from 12 PM to 3 PM. This limited opening is meant to help reduce traffic during peak hours and to observe how traffic flows through the tunnel. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), along with traffic police from Delhi and Gurugram, checked the tunnel and approved its partial opening after a detailed inspection. If things go well, the tunnel may be opened for longer hours in the future.
This new route will especially help travelers coming from Manesar, Sohna, and Jaipur by reducing their travel time and avoiding heavy traffic on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
Safety First: Some Vehicles Not Allowed
To ensure safety and a smooth journey, some vehicles will not be allowed to use the tunnel at first. This includes two-wheelers, three-wheelers, tractors with trolleys, and water or gas tankers. These steps are taken to keep the traffic moving without any delays and to avoid slow-moving vehicles in the tunnel.
A Big Step in the Dwarka Expressway Project
The Dwarka Expressway project runs from Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurugram to Shiv Murti near Mahipalpur in Delhi. The Gurugram part of the road has already been in use since last year, but the Delhi section, including this tunnel, was still under construction.
Now that the tunnel is ready, the full expressway is one step closer to becoming fully open. This will help reduce heavy traffic between Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and Manesar in Gurugram, especially near the Sirhaul border, which often faces jams.
A Major Project to Ease NCR Traffic
This tunnel is part of the larger Dwarka Expressway project, which costs around Rs 9,000 crore. It is designed to make travel across the National Capital Region (NCR) faster and easier. Another tunnel, 4 km long, is also being built to connect Shiv Murti with Palam Airport. The full project covers 28 km - with 23 km of elevated roads and 4 km of underground tunnels.
To speed up the work and complete the project on time, construction was divided between two different companies. Once the entire expressway is ready, the travel time from Manesar to Palam Airport is expected to come down to just 30 minutes.
Better Airport Access for Thousands
The opening of this 2.5 km tunnel is a big step towards better airport connectivity for thousands of people who travel every day from Gurugram, Jaipur, and nearby areas. It will also help two-way traffic move more smoothly between Dhaula Kuan and the Sirhaul border.
This new tunnel on the Dwarka Expressway will make journeys to the airport easier, quicker, and less stressful. The limited opening will allow officials to study traffic movement and make further improvements. Travelers can now look forward to a better experience, with fewer delays and more comfort on the road to Delhi Airport.
