The Delhi Metro on Thursday ran its first-ever train, TS#01, as a special service to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of passenger services in 2002. This special train was operated on the 8.3-km Shahdara-Tis Hazari stretch, the same route where Delhi Metro services were first launched more than 20 years

ago. The move allowed passengers to relive the historic first metro journey, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said. Delhi Metro began operations in 2002 and has since grown into one of India's largest and most successful urban transport systems. December 24 marked the completion of 23 years of its service to the city.
Regular Operation of Train TS#01
Train TS#01 is still in regular operation today. It was originally introduced as a four-coach train but was upgraded to six coaches in 2014. In 2023, it was further expanded to eight coaches to handle the increasing number of passengers.
Features of the Train
According to DMRC, the train has travelled nearly 2.9 million kilometres since it started service and has safely carried more than 60 million passengers. During this time, its doors have opened and closed around 2.4 million times, reflecting its heavy daily use.
The train was manufactured by the MRM Consortium of South Korea. It was first shipped to Kolkata and then brought to Delhi using the Indian Railways network. The original cost of the four-coach train was about Rs 24 crore.
DMRC stated the train uses an advanced propulsion system that helps cut carbon emissions by regenerating nearly 40 per cent of the power through regenerative braking.
Two Major Overhauls
TS#01 has gone through two major overhauls and a mid-life upgrade in 2024. These upgrades included new passenger information systems, CCTV cameras, emergency alarms, LCD route maps, better fire safety systems, and refurbished doors.
With a strong performance record, the train remains a symbol of Delhi Metro's 23-year journey, offering safe and reliable travel to commuters.
