Discovery Of The Oldest Pearl Town In UAE From The 6th Century, Amazing Talks

According to reports, archaeologists have discovered the oldest pearling settlement in the Persian Gulf on a United Arab Emirates Island.

History keeps us curious and it has the power to amaze us. Humans have discovered many things which give us a glimpse of our history and always leave us in wow! Great historical findings make us curious and one such finding has happened in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to reports, archaeologists have discovered the oldest pearling settlement in the Persian Gulf on a United Arab Emirates Island. Thousands of people originally called this village on Siniyah Island near Umm al-Quwain home, according to artifacts discovered there.

Several homes have been found that, according to the discovery, date as far back as the area's pre-Islamic history in the late sixth century. Older pearling towns are mentioned in historical documents, but this discovery marks the first time that archaeologists have literally discovered a location like this.

According to Timothy Power, who is an associate professor of Archaeology at the United Arab emirates (UAE) university, this is the earliest example of that kind of exceptionally unique Khaleeji pearling town, so it appears to be the spiritual ancestor of towns like Dubai.

Since the hamlet was established prior to the Arabian Peninsula being overrun by Islam, its residents were likely Christians. The founder of Islam, Muhammad, was born in the year 570 and died in the year 632 after conquering Mecca, now located in Saudi Arabia.
The Department of Tourism & Archaeology in Umm al-Quwain, UAE University, the Italian Archaeological Mission in the Emirate, and the prestigious Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York (NY) University all participated in the excavation.

About Siniyah Island:

At Umm al-Quwain, an emirate 50 kilometres northeast of Dubai on the Persian Gulf coast, Siniyah Island protects the Khor al-Beida marshlands. "Siniyah" means "flashing lights" in Arabic. The effect of the blazing Sun above may have given the island its name. On Siniyah Island, archaeologists in the year 2022 unearthed a 1,400-year-old Christian monastery.

The recently discovered pearling settlement, which covers an area of around 12 hectares, is located on one of the island's bends directly south of the monastery. On the island, a variety of homes made of beach rock and lime mortar were found by archaeologists. While some homes include courtyards, others have confined spaces. According to Power, there may be a social hierarchy implied by the different types of homes.

The discoveries and the tightly packed residences show that the town had a wealthy population of pearl merchants with palatial buildings plus pearl divers with one- or two-room homes, Power added.
