As train travel is an important part of life in India, Indian Railways is now working on several modern projects to make journeys faster and more comfortable. The Vande Bharat Express trains have already improved daytime travel with their modern chair-car design. However, passengers also want better options for overnight

trips. Therefore, Indian Railways is developing the Vande Bharat sleeper trains, which aim to provide a more premium experience than the current Rajdhani trains. Along with these, Amrit Bharat Express and NaMo Bharat trains are also being introduced for common, everyday travel. Moreover, India is also planning to roll out its own bullet train soon.
200 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
Over 200 Vande Bharat sleeper trains are expected to be introduced in the coming years. Different companies are building these trains: BEML, Kinet, and the Titagarh-BHEL group, while ICF is designing its own version as well. BEML has built two prototype sleeper train rakes, which are now being improved with minor changes. Officials expect the first trains to be launched soon.
Features of Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains will have 16 coaches, including AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier, and AC First Class. They can run at 160 kmph and offer better comfort, softer berths, improved lighting, modern toilets, automatic doors, CCTV cameras, and the KAVACH safety system. ICF is also developing its own longer 24-coach sleeper version with more toilets and a pantry car. This prototype is expected by late 2026.
Amrit Bharat Trains
Meanwhile, Amrit Bharat trains continue to be built for affordable long-distance travel. These non-AC push-pull trains are faster and come with improved interiors, better toilets, charging points, and a safer design. An AC version, Amrit Bharat 3.0, is also being planned.
Namo Bharat Trains
NaMo Bharat trains, suitable for short-distance intercity routes, are already in service and offer a metro-like travel experience. India has also created its first hydrogen-powered train and is working with BEML to produce an indigenous bullet train. The first Made-in-India bullet train is expected by 2027, designed especially for Indian weather and dust conditions.
With all these new projects, Indian Railways aims to make travel much more comfortable and efficient in the coming years.
