The Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express has become a significant travel option for passengers along this route. Recently, there was confusion about the train's operations, sparking concern among frequent travelers. However, the government has clarified the situation and provided updates on railway services and infrastructure projects in Kerala, which are crucial for improving connectivity.

Special Train Services and Vande Bharat Updates
Between July 31, 2024, and August 26, 2024, a special train service, 06001/06002 Ernakulam-Bengaluru Cantt. Special, was introduced to manage the rise in passenger traffic. This special service used a spare Vande Bharat rake and operated in addition to the nine regular trains already serving the route. This temporary arrangement may have led to speculation about changes to the regular Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express.
In a recent Lok Sabha question-answer session government reassured that the regular Vande Bharat service remains operational, fulfilling its role as a convenient and fast travel option.
The government has clarified that the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express has not been stopped. A recent misunderstanding might have occurred due to the operation of a special train service, which used a spare Vande Bharat rake.
Railway Infrastructure Development in Kerala
Kerala's railway infrastructure is undergoing significant development to meet growing demands. As of April 1, 2024, there are eight infrastructure projects in progress, including:
- Two new railway lines
- Six doubling projects spanning 419 kilometers
The total cost of these projects is estimated at ₹12,350 crore, with ₹3,046 crore already spent by March 2024.
Kerala's Vande Bharat Services
Currently, Kerala benefits from two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains that cater to various stations within the state. The introduction of these services is based on key considerations like passenger demand, operational feasibility, and resource availability.
Indian Railways emphasizes that all train services, including the Vande Bharat, are planned to meet the broader needs of the extensive railway network that connects multiple states.
Boost in Railway Funding
Railway funding for Kerala has seen a remarkable rise in recent years. Between 2009 and 2014, the average annual budget allocation was approximately ₹372 crore. For 2024-25, this has increased to ₹3,011 crore, showcasing the government's commitment to improving rail services in the state.
Land Acquisition Challenges
A major obstacle in the timely completion of railway projects is land acquisition. Out of the 475 hectares required, only 64 hectares (13%) have been acquired so far, with 411 hectares (87%) still pending. The Railways has deposited ₹2,112 crore with the Kerala government to facilitate land acquisition, but progress has been slow.
The Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express continues to operate as a vital travel option. With ongoing infrastructure projects and increased funding, the government is focused on enhancing railway connectivity in Kerala. Collaborative efforts, particularly in speeding up land acquisition, are key to achieving these goals.
