Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan Chowk Renamed To Birsa Munda Chowk

Sarai Kale Khan Chowk in Delhi has been renamed Birsa Munda Chowk, honouring the tribal leader on his 150th birth anniversary. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar highlighted the significance of this tribute in celebrating Munda's contributions to India's freedom struggle.

The Union Minister of Urban Development, Manohar Lal Khattar, has recently announced a significant change in the naming of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk, which will now honor Bhagwan Birsa Munda, a prominent figure in the freedom struggle. This rechristening to Birsa Munda Chowk marks a tribute to the heroic tribal leader on his 150th birth anniversary. Khattar emphasized the importance of this move, stating, "I am announcing today that the big chowk outside the ISBT bus stand here will be known after Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Seeing this statue and the name of that chowk, not only the citizens of Delhi but also the people visiting the International Bus stand will definitely be inspired by his life."

This decision aims to inspire not only Delhi's residents but also visitors to the International Bus Stand, by showcasing the life and contributions of Birsa Munda. It underscores the government's intention to honor the legacy of freedom fighters who might not be widely known but have played critical roles in India's struggle for independence.

Birsa Munda, often referred to as 'Dharti Aba' or the father of the earth, founded the Birsait faith, merging animism with indigenous beliefs and advocating for the worship of a single god. He emerged as a pivotal leader for the Munda tribe in the Chhotanagpur Plateau, leading a significant tribal movement against British colonization in the Bihar and Jharkhand regions during the early 19th century. His leadership in the "Ulgulan" or rebellion aimed to counteract the exploitative land grabbing and forced labor imposed by the British, asserting tribal rights and ownership over their lands. Unfortunately, his impactful life was cut short when he died at the age of 25 on June 9, 1900.

On the same day as the chowk's renaming, a statue of Bhagwan Birsa Munda was unveiled in New Delhi by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accompanied by Khattar and Delhi LG VK Saxena. This event, held on the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to India's tribal freedom struggle. Recognized for mobilizing the tribal community in Chotanagpur to fight for their independence, Birsa Munda's legacy continues to inspire.

In 2021, the Central Government declared November 15, Birsa Munda's birth anniversary, as 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas,' further solidifying his place in India’s rich history of resistance against colonial rule. This dedication underscores the government's commitment to commemorating the heroes of India's freedom movement, particularly those from tribal communities.

The renaming of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk to Birsa Munda Chowk not only pays homage to an influential leader but also serves as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made for India’s freedom. It is a step towards acknowledging and preserving the history and culture of India's tribal communities, ensuring that future generations understand and appreciate the diverse contributions to the nation's independence struggle.
