New Delhi's Sarita Vihar flyover is about to undergo significant repairs and expansion work, leading to the closure of certain lanes for 60 days, starting from May 1st until June 30th. This decision was made by the Public Works Department (PWD) after delaying earlier plans to renovate the flyover in 2023. The project, divided into four phases, aims to address crucial expansion joint issues and undertake necessary repair work to ensure the structural integrity of the flyover, which was constructed in 2001.

A structural audit conducted by the PWD highlighted the urgent need for repairs, prompting the department to seek approval from the traffic police to proceed with the project. While this renovation work is underway, commuters traveling from Mathura Road to Delhi-Faridabad via the flyover can expect increased traffic congestion. However, to minimize disruption, the PWD has assured that one carriageway will remain open for vehicular movement during the repair phases.
According to sources, the repair schedule involves the first and second phases focusing on the flyover portion from Ashram to Badarpur, while the third and fourth phases will address the stretch from Badarpur to Ashram. Each carriageway will undergo repair over a period of 30 days, with half a lane of the carriageway open for traffic at all times.
"The flyover will never be completely shut during the four phases of repair. Half a lane of the carriageway will always be open for traffic," reported Indian Express, citing a PWD source.

The PWD had originally intended to undertake expansion and repair of the flyover last year, but the plan was subsequently deferred. A PWD official stated, "The aging flyover, constructed in 2001, is in dire need of repair. Recently, the PWD sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Traffic Police for executing expansion and repair work on the stretch, and obtained approval. The department had conducted a comprehensive structural audit of the flyover before seeking the NOC. Work will commence promptly."
Commuters are advised by the Delhi Traffic Police to circumvent the affected stretch to avoid traffic snarls. It is recommended that commuters bound from Ashram on Mathura Road towards Badarpur and Faridabad utilize Road No 13A from the Sarita Vihar flyover slip road, making a U-turn on Road No 13A to access Mathura Road.
In light of the impending repairs, individuals intending to traverse the affected area between May 1st and June 30th are advised to plan alternative routes accordingly.
These repairs signify a proactive step by the authorities to ensure the safety and efficiency of transportation infrastructure in New Delhi. While inconveniences may arise during the repair period, the long-term benefits of a structurally sound flyover will undoubtedly outweigh the temporary disruptions.
