New Delhi's urban landscape is poised for a significant transformation with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announcing plans to expand its network. A new addition, the Golden Line corridor, will introduce 15 new stations, covering a distance of approximately 23 kilometres. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity within the capital and its neighbouring areas, potentially reducing travel times for both residents and visitors.
The Golden Line corridor, stretching 23.62 kilometres, will act as a vital link between the Kashmere Gate-Raja Nahar Singh Violet Line and the Airport Express Line. Key stations on this route include Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj, Chhatarpur, Kanpur, and Sangam Vihar. This development is part of DMRC's Phase 4 expansion plans, signalling a major boost in the city's public transport system.
Moreover, the Tughlakabad Metro Station, a part of the Golden Line, is set to become a strategic interchange hub. This four-level underground station, 23 metres deep, incorporates a parking facility and a subway for easier commuting and transfers, particularly to the Purple Line.
Phase 4 Expansion and Funding
Phase 4 of DMRC's expansion extends over 65 kilometres across three main corridors, promising to widen the metro's reach significantly. However, the completion timeline has been adjusted from December 2024 to March 2026, as per recent reports. Funding efforts have seen the Delhi Development Authority allocating Rs 350 crore in the 2023-2024 budget to support this massive undertaking. The total cost for the Phase 4 expansion, including the Golden Line, is estimated at around Rs 55,000 crore.
This expansion is not just about extending lines and adding stations. It's about creating a more connected city, where distances shrink, and communities grow closer. The Golden Line, with its strategic links and new stations, represents a step forward in making Delhi's transport system more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for millions of its inhabitants and visitors.
