Delhi Metro has upgraded 18 of its older trains with new display systems that show the current time, the estimated time of arrival (ETA) to the next interchange station, and the ETA for the last station on the route. These features appear on dynamic route maps and passenger information screens,

helping commuters stay updated throughout their journey.
Refurbishment Project
These trains are part of a larger midlife refurbishment project for 70 trains that were purchased between 2002 and 2005 during Phase I of the Delhi Metro. The upgrades began in 2021, as many of these trains had completed nearly 20 years of their 30-year lifespan. As part of the refurbishment, the trains are being fitted with CCTV cameras, mobile and laptop charging points, LCD route displays, new electrical panels, improved flooring, and fresh interior paint.
According to a DMRC official, the first batch of 12 refurbished trains did not receive the upgraded public address and passenger information systems. These improved features have been added to the second batch of 18 trains. The third batch of 22 trains will also get these systems, with work expected to be finished by 2027.
Finalization of 18 Trains
DMRC has nearly finalized the contract for the last group of 18 trains. These will likely be upgraded within the next two years. Officials also confirmed that more trains will receive the updated passenger information systems as their refurbishment process begins.
The upgraded trains now match the standards of the newer trains introduced under Phases II and III. The official added that each train takes about 40 days to refurbish. DMRC carefully plans the schedule so that enough trains remain available for daily passenger service and there is no disruption to metro operations.
