Residents across Delhi and the wider NCR region experienced cloudy skies, light rain, and strong winds on Wednesday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for thunderstorms, lightning, rain, and hailstorms in several parts of the capital.

Delhi Heat Alert
After recent rain and thunderstorms, Delhi is now expected to face intense heat in the coming days. Some parts of Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Greater Noida, and the Palam area, received light showers and strong winds on Wednesday evening. On Thursday morning, the Safdarjung weather station also recorded rainfall between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Weather experts said the current rain system is moving towards Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, but Delhi may continue to see cloudy skies for the rest of the day.
Increase in Temperatures
However, this relief from the heat will not last long. Meteorologists have warned that temperatures will start rising sharply from Friday onwards. Earlier this week, Safdarjung recorded the month's highest temperature at 39°C. With clearer skies expected after the rain, the mercury is likely to rise quickly.
According to the forecast, Delhi's maximum temperature on May 14 is expected to range from 38°C to 40°C, with partly cloudy conditions. From May 15 to May 17, temperatures are likely to cross the 40°C mark for the first time this month. By the middle of next week, temperatures may remain between 40°C and 42°C.
Delhi's Heatwave Conditions
Apart from rising temperatures, Delhi may also experience heatwave-like conditions because of strong and hot surface winds. Weather officials said wind speeds will increase from Friday and continue to remain strong throughout next week.
Advisory for Residents
Residents have been advised to take precautions during this hot weather. People should avoid staying outdoors for long periods during peak afternoon hours, drink enough water, and protect themselves from dry and hot winds to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
