Delhi is likely to continue experiencing intense heat this week with temperatures reaching nearly 45 degrees Celsius.

Delhi Heat Alert
The India Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave conditions in the city from May 19 to May 22. For Tuesday, the IMD issued a yellow alert warning people about the heatwave. Weather experts stated that the temperature could reach 45 degrees Celsius within the next two days.
Delhi's Extreme Weather Conditions
Monday morning was also very hot in the capital, with minimum temperatures staying above normal at most weather stations. According to IMD data, Safdarjung, which is Delhi's main weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius. This became the hottest day of May in the last two years.
Reason behind the Extreme Heatwave Conditions
Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather explained that strong northwesterly winds are reaching Delhi from the Thar Desert in Rajasthan and the nearby areas of central Pakistan. These winds pass through large dry regions and become extremely hot and dry before entering the capital. As a result, heat gets trapped near the ground, making weather conditions harsher and increasing discomfort for people across the city.
No Possibility of Thunderstorms
Weather experts also said there is no possibility of thunderstorms or pre-monsoon rainfall in Delhi over the next 10 days. Due to the lack of rain and the continued flow of hot winds, temperatures are expected to remain very high throughout the week.
Usage of Electricity
The extreme heat has also increased electricity use in the capital. On Monday, Delhi's peak power demand reached 7,542 megawatts, which is the highest recorded so far this summer season. Officials estimate that the city's electricity demand may cross 9,000 megawatts later this year as people continue using air conditioners and cooling devices to deal with the severe heatwave conditions.
