Chhattisgarh’s Kanger Valley Joins UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites

Chhattisgarh has taken a big step toward global recognition with the inclusion of Kanger Valley National Park in UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. This recognition highlights the park's rich biodiversity and unique natural beauty. If granted full World Heritage status, it could boost international tourism and help preserve the region's cultural and ecological heritage.

A Proud Moment for Chhattisgarh

The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, expressed his happiness over this achievement. He said that the inclusion of Kanger Valley in UNESCO's Tentative List is a result of hard work and dedication. He also emphasized that this recognition would open new opportunities in tourism and employment for the state. The government remains committed to preserving Chhattisgarh's heritage for future generations.

Efforts Behind the Recognition

The recognition of Kanger Valley National Park was made possible through the combined efforts of the Chhattisgarh government and the Archaeological Survey of India. In December 2023, both organizations worked together to highlight the park's global significance. Their efforts included detailed studies of the park's unique biodiversity, archaeological value, and diverse ecosystem. As a result, Kanger Valley became the first site in Chhattisgarh to be included in UNESCO's Tentative List.

A Natural and Archaeological Treasure

Kanger Valley National Park is famous for its natural beauty and biodiversity. It is home to more than 15 limestone caves, such as Kotamsar, Kailash, and Dandak, which are geological wonders with archaeological significance. The park is also a sanctuary for rare wildlife species like otters, mouse deer, giant squirrels, Lethis softshell turtles, and wild wolves. Additionally, it houses over 200 bird species, 900 plant species, and about 140 butterfly species, making it a paradise for nature lovers.

Impact on Local Communities

The potential UNESCO status is expected to positively impact the local communities, especially the Dhruva and Gond tribes. These indigenous communities have lived in the forest for generations and share a deep cultural connection with it. An increase in tourism could provide them with new employment opportunities and bring global recognition to their traditions and way of life.

Along with Kanger Valley's recognition, another achievement for Chhattisgarh's tourism sector is the selection of Dhudmaras village in Bastar under the UNWTO's Best Tourist Village promotion program. These developments are putting Chhattisgarh on the global tourism map, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking natural and cultural experiences.

With Kanger Valley's inclusion in UNESCO's Tentative List, Chhattisgarh's tourism landscape is set to grow, bringing more opportunities for conservation, employment, and global appreciation of its natural and cultural wonders.
