Southern Railway and Chennai Metro Unveil Ambitious Plan to Transform Tambaram into Major Mobility Hub

Southern Railway, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), and the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) are getting ready for important discussions on a major plan to turn Tambaram into a fully integrated mobility hub. This hub will connect several fast-transit corridors, including the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), making Tambaram

Joint Meeting to be Held

According to the CUMTA special officer, I. Jayakumar, a joint meeting will be held between Southern Railway, CUMTA, and the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) to finalise the concept design for an "integrated station" at Tambaram. The idea is to bring metro services, suburban railway lines, and future high-speed regional trains under one coordinated system. Southern Railway has scheduled this meeting for the end of November at its Park Town office. Officials from the Chennai railway division, construction departments, and RLDA have been asked to participate. They will review different design options and discuss how the integrated station can function smoothly.

Three Transport Projects to be Undertaken

The state government is also pushing forward three major transport projects that will pass through Tambaram: the extension of the Airport Metro line to Kilambakkam near Vandalur, the Phase III Metro corridor from Tambaram to Guindy via Velachery, and the proposed RRTS route from Alandur to Villupuram-Puducherry through Tambaram.
Tambaram is already being expanded as a major railway terminal for express, mail, and suburban trains. RLDA is designing new station buildings on both the GST Road and Selaiyur sides. Jayakumar said that all these upcoming projects must be connected properly with the Tambaram Railway Station to offer seamless travel for passengers.

The central government's push for multi-modal transport hubs has added urgency to this plan. The railways are currently checking the feasibility before further discussions. This integration project is seen as an important test for Chennai's long-term mobility plan. If successful, Tambaram will become the first fully planned junction connecting metro, suburban, long-distance, and future regional rapid transit systems.
