The project will add a second railway line on the 68-km Arakkonam-Chengalpattu section under Southern Railway. This route is an important part of Chennai's suburban circular railway network, connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam. At present, the existing single line is heavily used, and railway traffic is expected to grow further in the coming years.

Chennai Railway Corridor to Pass through Several Important Areas

The railway corridor passes through major industrial and economic areas such as Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, Irungattukottai, and Mahindra World City. The route is important for transporting goods like automobiles, cement, iron, steel, and foodgrains. The proposed Parandur airport project near Kancheepuram also adds importance to this railway section.

How will this Project Help?

Railway officials said the new line will help trains move faster and more smoothly by reducing delays and waiting time. It is also expected to improve operational flexibility and increase the frequency of suburban train services for daily commuters. Passenger safety and train speed are also likely to improve after the project is completed.

The Ministry of Railways said the project is part of its larger plan to modernise railway infrastructure and improve connectivity in fast-growing urban and industrial regions. Residents and commuters have welcomed the decision and hope the work will be completed on time to meet rising travel demand in Chennai's suburban areas.
