Chennai, Puducherry 3rd level Cyclone Alert: Heavy Rains Predicted on Christmas-Details Inside

Residents of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for heavy rains this Christmas as the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issues warnings of thunderstorms and lightning in the coming days. With a third-level cyclone alert in place for key coastal regions, authorities are urging vigilance and preparedness to tackle the potential weather challenges.

Chennai Puducherry 3rd level Cyclone

According to the RMC, isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected in districts like Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry on December 24. By December 25, Christmas Day, thunderstorms with lightning are likely to affect various parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area. Meanwhile, other areas could experience light to moderate rainfall.

The wet weather is forecast to continue from December 26 to December 28, with light to moderate rain expected at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. This rainy spell is partly influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coastlines, which may bring additional rainfall.

Cyclone Alert and Safety Measures

In response to these predictions, the RMC has issued a third-level cyclone alert for seven key ports in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ennore, Kattupalli, Puducherry, and Karaikal. These measures reflect the seriousness of the situation and aim to ensure the safety of coastal communities.

Relief and Caution After Cyclone Fengal

The recent rains follow the devastating Cyclone Fengal, which hit Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 29 to December 1. The cyclone caused extensive damage, claiming 12 lives and flooding over 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land. The farming community faced significant financial losses due to the disaster.

While the current rains bring some relief from high temperatures, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further disruptions. The ongoing rains also serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and cooperation during adverse weather conditions.

Residents of the affected regions are urged to stay alert and follow weather updates closely. Precautionary steps such as avoiding unnecessary travel, securing property, and staying indoors during thunderstorms can help minimize risks.

As Tamil Nadu and Puducherry prepare for a rainy Christmas, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of the communities involved. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, the region can navigate these weather challenges effectively.
