The Tamil Nadu government has started work on the third phase of the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) to improve transport and reduce traffic jams in Chennai and nearby areas. This new part of the project stretches from Tiruvallur Bypass to Sriperumbudur and was launched by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

A Big Step Towards Better Connectivity
This project is very important for linking major trade routes between Ennore and Mahabalipuram. The CPRR aims to make the movement of goods and vehicles faster and smoother, helping both people and businesses. It will also help reduce traffic on the main city roads by giving an alternate route for long-distance and heavy vehicles.
The complete CPRR will cover a distance of 133 kilometres, starting from Ennore Port and ending at Poonjeri near Mamallapuram. This road project is being managed by the state's Highways and Minor Ports Department and is expected to be finished by the end of 2025.
New Six-Lane Road and Service Lanes
The newly launched phase includes the construction of a six-lane road over a stretch of about 30.10 kilometres. This road will run between Tiruvallur Bypass and Sriperumbudur. To make it easier for local people to travel nearby areas, two-lane service roads will also be built along the main road.
This part of the project has been given a budget of Rs 2,689.74 crore. It is a key part of the larger Chennai Border Road Project, which focuses on better road planning to improve traffic movement and support economic development.
Land Acquisition and Forest Area
According to Highways Department officials, construction on the 30.8 km section is already in progress. One of the major tasks is acquiring land for the road and service lanes. Some of this land falls within a reserved forest area, so a special proposal is being processed to swap land. This will make space for the road while taking care of environmental rules.
An official explained, "As part of the project, we need to build two-lane service roads for local traffic. Since some forest land is involved, we are working on a land swap plan to move forward."
Leaders Join for the Launch
The launch of Phase III was attended by many important leaders including Minister for Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports E V Velu, and Minister for Minorities Welfare S M Nasar. Their presence showed how important this project is for the state's development.
The Chennai Peripheral Ring Road Phase III is a major project that will help people travel easily, support businesses, and reduce traffic inside the city. Once completed, it will connect several important locations and give a big boost to the state's economy and road network.
