Chennai is set to celebrate Madras Day this year, with a metro train being transformed into a moving concert venue. The special event, called 'Metrovil Madras Day', will be held in the early hours of August 22, organised by Super Chennai in association with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

Chennai Metro's Special Journey on 22 August
The special metro journey will start from Koyambedu metro station. The train will travel towards Chennai Airport and then return to Koyambedu. The entire ride is expected to take around 45 minutes to one hour. During the journey, passengers can enjoy a live musical performance by Chennai-based band Office Gaana.
The celebration will begin at Koyambedu with a cake-cutting ceremony to mark Madras Day. After the ceremony, participants will board the metro train and enjoy the special concert while travelling through the city.
The organisers said that participation in the event was free, but people had to register in advance to attend. However, public responses were strong, and registrations reportedly closed within just 30 minutes after opening, with thousands of people applying for a place on the special metro ride.
The organisers said the idea was to celebrate Chennai, its people and the things that make the city special. Instead of organising a traditional Madras Day programme at a fixed venue, they wanted to create a different and memorable experience for residents.
The event also highlights the city's growing connection with its metro network, using public transport as a space for cultural celebrations. With music, a metro journey, and the spirit of Madras Day coming together, the special service is expected to offer participants a unique way to celebrate Chennai's history and identity.
