Chennai Metro Rail is working on the Phase II project by appointing a third contractor to complete track laying between Porur and Power House. Earlier, the viaduct and tracks between Poonamallee and Porur were completed, allowing trial runs to begin. However, the next section, from Porur to Power House, has faced

several delays and difficulties.
Challenges Faced by Chennai Metro
One major challenge is the ongoing construction of a 3.75 km double-decker viaduct between Alapakkam and Alwarthirunagar, which is part of this stretch. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) had instructed the first contractor to start laying tracks on parts of the viaduct that were already built. But the contractor did not progress as expected and fell behind schedule. To avoid further delays, CMRL brought in another contractor who was already working on the viaduct in the same stretch. Both contractors are laying tracks in different sections between Porur and Power House. However, officials noticed that even with two contractors, the work was not moving fast enough.
Appointment of New Contractors
CMRL has now appointed a third contractor to focus solely on track laying for the first track work. Officials stated they are closely monitoring progress to ensure the completion of work as soon as possible. They also explained that removing a contractor and issuing new tenders would have caused major delays. Instead, involving contractors already working on nearby sections is a faster and more practical solution. Finishing the Porur to Power House stretch quickly is important for commuters. Once this link is ready, passengers will be able to switch from the Phase II network to the existing Phase I network at Vadapalani Metro station, improving connectivity across the city.
