second instalment under the Chennai Metro Rail Investment Project, and is part of a larger USD 780 million financing plan approved by ADB in 2022. Earlier, ADB had released USD 350 million as the first tranche to begin work on the project.

Newly Approved Funds

The newly approved funds will be used to build important sections of Metro Lines 3, 4, and 5. These corridors will cover about 20 kilometres and include both elevated and underground stretches. As part of this phase, 18 new Metro stations will be constructed. All stations will be designed to be accessible for everyone, including senior citizens and people with disabilities. They will also have features to withstand natural disasters and extreme weather, ensuring passenger safety and uninterrupted services.

How Will the Project Help Chennai Residents?

ADB officials said the project will help Chennai residents enjoy faster, safer, and more dependable travel while also supporting the city's goal of reducing carbon emissions. The bank has expressed its commitment to continuing its partnership with local authorities to expand metro connectivity and improve the overall capacity of Chennai's public transport system. The project also includes plans to upgrade multimodal transport hubs. This will make it easier for passengers to switch between the Metro, buses, bicycles, and other last-mile transport options, saving time and improving convenience.

Moreover, special focus will be placed on inclusivity and safety. Steps will be taken to improve travel conditions for women and other vulnerable groups. The project will also support efforts to increase non-ticket revenue, helping the Metro system remain financially strong in the long run. Construction under this phase is expected to be completed by mid-2028, further supporting Chennai's move towards sustainable and eco-friendly urban transport.
