The project will be implemented by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Officials said the approval clears important formalities and allows the project to move towards the construction stage. The corridor is planned to connect Chennai Airport directly with the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam, making travel easier for passengers, office-goers, and daily commuters.

Chennai Metro Extension

According to reports, the proposed metro extension will cover around 15.4 km and include nearly 12 to 13 stations along the route. The project cost is estimated to be around Rs 9,000 crore. The route is expected to pass through important areas such as Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, and Vandalur.

Preparatory Work

Preparatory work such as land acquisition, utility shifting, surveys, and tender processes is expected to begin soon under CMRL's supervision. Officials said efforts will be made to minimise disruption during construction.

How will this Metro Project Benefit Commuters?

The metro line is also planned to integrate with Chennai's existing metro network, improving connectivity across the city. Authorities believe the project will reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion on busy roads, and encourage more people to use public transport instead of private vehicles.

The new metro extension is also expected to improve access to the recently opened Kilambakkam bus terminus, which serves long-distance buses from Chennai. Once completed, the corridor will become an important transport link connecting the airport, metro system, railway stations, and major bus hubs.
