Bihar's New 4.56 km Long, 6-Lane Bridge Connecting Digha and Sonepur Gets Approved

Boosting Bihar's Connectivity:

In a significant development, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has granted approval for the construction of a state-of-the-art 6-lane bridge connecting Digha and Sonepur across the Ganga River in Bihar. The move is anticipated to revolutionize the region's transportation infrastructure, fostering economic development and ensuring smoother traffic flow.

Bihars New 6-Lane Bridge

The Cabinet's nod for the construction of a 4.56 km long, 6-lane high-level bridge is set to be a game-changer for the connectivity between Digha and Sonepur in Bihar. This pivotal project will significantly enhance the transportation network, allowing for seamless movement of goods and commodities and unlocking the economic potential of the region.

Project Overview:

The proposed bridge, parallel to the existing Digha-Sonepur Rail-Cum-Road Bridge, aims to eliminate the current economic blockade by providing a direct road link for the transport of goods between Digha and Sonepur. The bridge's strategic location will offer direct connectivity from Patna to key corridors, including the Golden Quadrilateral, Buddha Circuit, and NH-139 at Aurangabad and Sonepur.

Economic Impact:

With an estimated project cost of Rs. 3,064.45 crore, the 6-lane bridge is poised to make traffic faster and easier, propelling the overall development of the state, especially North Bihar. Economic analysis indicates a favorable Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) ranging from 13.1% to 17.6%, underscoring the project's viability.

Implementation Strategy:

The project will be implemented on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode, incorporating cutting-edge technologies such as 5D Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS). Monthly drone mapping will ensure the quality of construction and operations.

Employment Generation:

Apart from its infrastructural impact, the project is expected to generate direct employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers during the construction and maintenance phases.

Connectivity Benefits:

The bridge is strategically positioned to provide better connectivity between North and South Bihar, serving as a vital link in the state's transportation network. The improved movement of vehicles is expected to contribute to the overall development of the region.

Background and Context:

While Digha is known for its religious significance and historical Digha Ghat, Sonepur attracts millions with its annual cattle fair, showcasing the cultural and religious diversity of Bihar. Despite the existing rail-cum-road bridge, the 6-lane bridge is poised to be a significant infrastructural leap, facilitating smoother traffic flow and economic growth.

The approved 6-lane bridge across the Ganga River signifies a crucial step towards bolstering Bihar's connectivity and promoting socio-economic growth. As the state embarks on this transformative project, it opens doors to enhanced trade, tourism, and accessibility, marking a milestone in the region's development journey.
