The Bhadrakali temple in Hanamkonda district is set to experience a significant makeover, inspired by the famous Meenakshi temple in Madurai. This historic site, which first sought developmental changes in the 1980s through its then chief priest BS Ganesh Shastri, had seen limited progress despite a financial boost from a Congress-led government. However, the project is now gaining momentum, with a substantial investment aimed at enhancing the temple's infrastructure and aesthetics.
The revival of the temple's development plan saw Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, the district in-charge minister, and Konda Surekha, the Endowments Minister, initiating the construction of Mada Veedhulu with a budget of Rs 30 crore. This endeavor is part of a larger Rs 54 crore project that also includes building majestic Raja Gopurams. Officials have reported that the construction is proceeding swiftly, with expectations to complete the Mada Veedhulu before the rainy season begins.
Boosting Traditional Aesthetics and Accessibility
In an effort to preserve traditional aesthetics, the Endowments department has enlisted the expertise of sculptors and architects from the Meenakshi temple. This collaboration aims to ensure that the Raja Gopurams mirror the grandeur and precision of their Madurai counterparts. Furthermore, the engineering wing has undertaken preparatory work by leveling the temple grounds and clearing a portion of the hillock at the back, facilitating the development of Mada Veedhulu.
The temple's facelift is not only about aesthetics but also accessibility. By clearing and leveling the area around the shrine, the project aims to make it easier for devotees to visit. This aspect of the renovation is crucial, as the temple has already seen a rise in the number of visitors. The increase in footfall is partly attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit, with over 20,000 devotees attending on auspicious days and a daily average of 5,000 to 10,000 visitors.
Securing Future Development Funds
The pursuit of further development for the Bhadrakali temple involves strategic financial planning. S Bheem Rao, the Executive Engineer of KUDA, revealed plans to submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for additional funds under the Union government's PRASAD scheme. This report will complement another DPR specifically focused on the construction of the Raja Gopurams, as both initiatives strive to enhance the temple's infrastructure and spiritual ambiance.
