Bengaluru's road network is set to improve with the completion of a 21-kilometer stretch of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR). This new road will connect Hoskote to the Tamil Nadu border. The project aims to reduce congestion in the city and make travel between Bengaluru and Chennai smoother. The stretch will be completed by March 2025, taking the project a step closer to its full length of 288 kilometers, expected to be completed by 2027. Once finished, the STRR will help commercial vehicles bypass Bengaluru, reducing traffic inside the city.

Better Connectivity Between Major Cities
The STRR is not just a local road but an important link for larger transportation networks. It will provide easy access to the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway, which will later connect with the 330-kilometer Bangalore-Mangalore Expressway. This new road system will help people and goods move faster between states. It is expected to boost trade, reduce travel time, and improve transport safety.
Smoother and Safer Travel
The newly built part of the STRR will have six lanes and an 11-meter-wide median, similar to Bengaluru's NICE Road. To make travel safe and smooth, the project will include 11 underpasses. A railway overbridge will also be built at Lingadeeramallasandra village over the Bengaluru-Chennai railway line. This bridge is expected to be ready by February 2025. These features will help avoid traffic jams and make driving safer for passengers and transporters.
Future Plans for the STRR
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has big plans for the STRR. Tenders have already been invited for five more stretches of road, covering 144.25 kilometers. These new sections will cost around Rs 4,749 crore and are expected to be completed in two years. Once ready, they will take long-distance traffic away from Bengaluru's busy streets. This will make travel between Chennai, Mangalore, and other major cities faster and easier for commercial vehicles.
Balancing Development and Nature
One important part of the STRR project is its design around the eco-sensitive zone of Bannerghatta National Park. To protect the environment, a special 8.1-kilometer elevated highway will be built, reducing harm to the park's wildlife. The expressway will have a right of way of 28.5 meters to minimize its impact on nature. This ensures that while Bengaluru's roads improve, the city's greenery is also protected.
Project Details and Benefits
The STRR project is estimated to cost Rs 17,000 crore and is being developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The road will be designed for vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 100 kmph. Some sections will have four lanes, while others will have six lanes, depending on the traffic needs. The total length of the road will be about 280.836 kilometers, and it is expected to be fully completed by December 2025.
Once finished, the STRR will greatly improve Bengaluru's traffic conditions, reduce congestion, and boost regional economic growth. By providing a key connection to the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway and making travel easier, this project will mark a major step in modernizing Bengaluru's transport system.
