The much-awaited Namma Metro Pink Line in Bengaluru has been delayed once again, mainly because the delivery of new train sets has yet to take place. The 21.25 km route from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara was first expected to open by the end of 2025. Later, the date was pushed

to March 2026. Now, the latest estimate suggests that the line will only be ready for passengers by May 2026.
Supply of New Metro Coaches
Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) received the contract in August 2023 to supply new metro coaches for several Bangalore Metro Phase 2 projects. The order was given by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL). Under this agreement, BEML must manufacture 318 coaches in total. Out of these, 96 coaches are meant for the Pink Line, another 96 for Phase 2A (Blue Line from Silk Board to KR Puram), and 126 for Phase 2B (Blue Line from KR Puram to the airport). Each set contains six coaches.
Prototype Train for the Pink Line
The prototype train for the Pink Line is expected to arrive by the end of December. Once it arrives, at least two months will be required for testing, trials, and safety approvals. Metro services cannot start with only one train, and authorities say a minimum of three trains are needed to begin operations. This means the line is unlikely to start running before mid-2026.
Although the elevated part of the Pink Line is already complete, it cannot be opened for public use because trains are not yet available. Officials say that once BEML begins delivering the rakes, services on the elevated stretch could start with three or four trains. The underground section, however, is expected to be ready only by December 2026. Until then, the finished portions of the project will remain idle.
