Chickpet Metro station, one of Bengaluru's busiest stops and the main gateway to the city's popular shopping hub, is struggling to handle huge crowds during peak hours. The area attracts thousands of traders and shoppers every day, many carrying heavy bags from the nearby wholesale and retail markets.

Commuters Disappointment
On Sunday, the situation became chaotic when large crowds gathered at the entry gate facing BVK Iyengar Road. Passengers said it took almost 25 minutes to reach the ticket counter due to congestion. "Only one metal detector is working for everyone, and the lift is restricted to senior citizens and differently abled people. Most weekend shoppers carry big bags, which makes it even harder to move," said Arvind Singhi, a local businessman. Daily commuter Praveen Jain said that overcrowding often forces people, including women with children, to queue up on the road. "It's been like this for months, and authorities must act," he said.
Closed Gates Causing Issues During Peak Hour
Although the station has four gates, only two are open. The others have been shut for over two years and appear neglected, with rusted shutters and stained walls. Traders and commuters say the rush at the main gate has become unbearable in recent months. Trade activist Sajjan Raj Mehta criticised the "unscientific handling" of the issue and said opening extra gates would ease pressure. The Bengaluru Metro Commuters' Association (BMCA) also demanded immediate action, calling it negligence. "Chickpet is even busier than KR Market station and serves passengers heading towards Mysuru Road. Closing gates during rush hours makes no sense," said BMCA member Rajesh Bhat.
However, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) denied the complaints, saying the rush was temporary due to the festive season. Officials added that the closed gates would be reopened soon.
