In an effort to reduce traffic congestion and improve road discipline, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) will restart the towing of vehicles parked illegally in no-parking zones. This rule will apply to 22 busy traffic corridors and 75 important junctions, mainly in the Central Business District (CBD). The decision aims to prevent vehicles from blocking roads, making daily commutes smoother for residents.

The announcement was made by Home Minister G. Parameshwara at the opening of the Bengaluru Traffic Police Museum at the Traffic Management Centre. He stated that vehicle towing was previously stopped for various reasons but is now being brought back due to public demand. "People have requested stricter traffic control, so the government has decided to restart towing in select areas," he said.
Changes in Traffic Rules for Cubbon Park
Along with vehicle towing, new traffic rules have been introduced for Cubbon Park. Earlier, vehicles were not allowed inside the park on second and fourth Saturdays and on certain public holidays. Now, under the new rule, vehicles can enter the park between 7 PM and 10 PM on these days. However, the rule allowing vehicle movement on first and third Saturdays remains unchanged. This change aims to maintain a balance between public recreation and urban traffic needs.
Why Towing Was Stopped?
The towing system was suspended in February 2022 after complaints from motorists about harassment by towing staff. The government had promised to stop the practice until a new, fair policy was introduced. The break allowed officials to review and improve towing rules to ensure they are enforced fairly.
Traffic Awareness Through a New Museum
To educate people on road safety, the Bengaluru Traffic Police Museum and Experience Centre were opened. The museum displays vintage traffic equipment, old uniforms, historic photographs, and interactive displays about traffic rules and safety.
The Experience Centre includes advanced simulations, real-time traffic models, and quizzes on road safety. It is designed for students, researchers, and traffic experts to understand responsible road use.
New Mobile App for Commuters
Home Minister Parameshwara also launched the ASTraM Mobile app. This app provides real-time traffic updates, allows users to report accidents and traffic violations, and offers an option to pay fines.
With these new steps-vehicle towing, traffic education, and digital tools-Bengaluru is making efforts to improve road safety and reduce congestion.
