Bengaluru Metro passengers may soon see relief from the long-standing problem of parking shortages near metro stations. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has announced plans to build modern multi-level parking complexes at selected locations across the city. The move is aimed at organising parking, improving safety for commuters, and reducing

traffic congestion around busy Namma Metro stations.
Private Contractors to Handle Metro Stations
Currently, parking near many metro stations is handled by private contractors who use open plots or vacant land. While this provides some convenience, commuters often face problems such as poor space management, weak security, insufficient lighting, and uneven facilities. In several areas, badly organised parking spills onto nearby roads, adding to traffic jams and creating risks for pedestrians.
Multi-Level Parking Facilities
To solve these issues, the GBA has proposed structured, multi-level parking facilities with better planning and modern systems. These parking complexes are designed to hold more vehicles by using vertical space, which means more two-wheelers and cars can be parked without needing large areas of land. This is expected to clear roads and footpaths near metro stations and ease traffic congestion.
How Will New Parking Structures Improve Commutation?
Officials said the new parking structures will also improve commuter safety. Features such as CCTV cameras, proper entry and exit points, and good lighting will help create a safer and more organised parking environment. With regulated parking, traffic flow around metro stations is also expected to improve.
Detailed List of Metro Stations
At a recent coordination meeting, GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao asked officials to prepare a detailed list of metro stations where multi-level parking can be built. The meeting included representatives from the city's five municipal corporations, the Bengaluru Police, and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). This joint effort is important because the project involves city planning, traffic control, and metro operations.
Passengers' Demand for Secure Metro Parking Spaces
For years, metro users have demanded secure and organised parking, especially at busy stations. Earlier plans did not move ahead, but the latest decision to identify specific stations has renewed hope. If implemented well, the project could greatly improve the metro experience and encourage more people to use public transport instead of private vehicles.
