Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Railways, has announced a new railway connection to improve travel to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from Bengaluru. This railway link will be 7.9 kilometers long and will have three stations along the way. The project aims to make travel easier for both residents and visitors by providing another way to reach the airport.

The railway line will include a 6.25-kilometer elevated track and 1.65 kilometers of underground track. These design choices will help navigate the city's landscape effectively. Speaking about the project, Vaishnaw shared his experience of traveling by train from the airport to the city center. He highlighted the potential of this connectivity and mentioned that some technical challenges, like the need for a rail flyover, have now been addressed. This project is expected to bring relief to commuters by offering a smooth and efficient transport option.
Expanding Airport Connectivity
This new railway link will complement the Metro and suburban rail services that already connect Bengaluru to the airport. Since opening in 2008, the airport, located about 35 kilometers from the city center, has been looking for better transport solutions for its millions of passengers. The nearest railway station to the airport, KIA Halt, is 3.5 kilometers from the terminal. It was built by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) at a cost of Rs 3 crore and was inaugurated on January 4, 2021. This station was created to serve the 28,000 employees at the airport as well as passengers seeking a convenient travel option.
To help travelers, BIAL operates free shuttle buses that run between KIA Halt and the airport terminal, matching train schedules to ensure easy transfers. However, the use of train services has remained low due to the limited frequency of trains running on the single-track route between Yelahanka and Devanahalli. The new railway link aims to solve this issue by providing a more reliable and frequent service.
Current and Future Infrastructure Developments
Bengaluru is growing fast, and improving transport facilities is crucial. The city is working on several transport projects, including the KR Pura-KIA (Blue Line) Metro and the Bengaluru suburban rail project. The Sampige Line, which will connect KSR Bengaluru to Yelahanka and Devanahalli, is also being planned. These projects, along with the new railway link, will make travel to the airport much easier in the future.
This new railway link shows the government's commitment to improving urban mobility. By solving existing problems and planning for future needs, Bengaluru is working towards a better-connected city. The railway expansion will help reduce congestion and offer a smoother travel experience for everyone.
The announcement of the railway link between Doddajala and KIA is an important step in improving Bengaluru's transport network. With both elevated and underground sections, this project will help ease travel difficulties for airport commuters. As the city waits for this and other transport projects to be completed, travelers can look forward to an easier and more comfortable journey to the airport.
