The Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for many parts of Karnataka, especially in the southern interior regions. This weather is expected to continue until May 6, with Bengaluru and nearby districts likely to receive regular rain and occasional lightning during this period.

Rain Expected in South and North Karnataka
From April 30, Bengaluru city and rural areas will start seeing light rainfall, with temperatures staying between 24 and 33 degrees Celsius. Other areas such as Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and Ramanagara will also see similar weather. Light showers are expected even in the north interior districts like Gadag and Bidar.
The main reason for this weather pattern is a cyclonic circulation that has developed over the Bay of Bengal. This system is moving towards Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and is located about 0.9 km above sea level. It is causing the current changes in weather across the state.
Normal Rain Followed by Heavy Showers
Between May 1 and May 3, Bengaluru, Davangere, Mangalore, and other interior parts of the state will receive normal rainfall. After this, from May 4 onwards, heavy rain is expected to affect nearly all districts in Karnataka. The southern interior region, in particular, will face pre-monsoon rains with thunder and lightning.
Strong Winds and Lightning Predicted
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre shared on Twitter that over the next five days, gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 60 km per hour are expected in many areas. These winds may come with thunder and lightning, and scattered rainfall is likely to occur across the state.
Slight Drop in Temperature Expected
Recently, the temperature in many areas of Karnataka has been quite high. Kalaburagi recorded a maximum of 41 degrees Celsius, while other districts like Haveri, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, and Dakshina Kannada also experienced high heat. However, with the arrival of rain, a slight drop in temperatures is expected, giving people some relief from the hot weather.
The changing weather, driven by the cyclonic system, will bring both benefits and challenges. While the rain will cool down the region and help with water needs, the thunderstorms and strong winds may cause minor disruptions. People are advised to stay informed through weather updates and take safety precautions during thunderstorms.
Karnataka is set for a wet and cooler start to May as it prepares for pre-monsoon rains across the state.
