In Bengaluru, traffic congestion is a daily challenge, especially at busy junctions like Okalipuram. To tackle this issue, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) began an ambitious project in 2015 to create a signal-free corridor at Okalipuram Junction. This project aimed to improve connectivity for commuters traveling from Rajajinagar and Malleswaram to the KSR Railway Station. With an investment of ₹102 crore, the project is now nearly complete, promising smoother travel and reduced congestion in this bustling part of the city.

Highlights of the Project
The Okalipuram signal-free corridor is an eight-lane project designed to ease traffic movement toward the KSR City Railway Station. Two lanes of the corridor are set to be completed and open by February 2025, enhancing the route's efficiency. The project has already delivered one-way flyovers connecting Rajajinagar and Malleswaram to the station and an underpass beneath the Bengaluru-Tumakuru railway track, inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in two phases-2018 and 2024.
This development included constructing an eight-lane corridor and a railway underbridge. BBMP allocated an additional ₹156 crore for land acquisition from the Railway Department to make the project feasible.
Challenges and Successes
The construction faced several hurdles, particularly while installing concrete boxes for the underbridge beneath the busy Chennai-Bengaluru railway line. This critical task was carried out between 12:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. to minimize disruptions to train schedules. The successful completion of this portion demonstrates the project's careful planning and execution.
The flyover connecting the station's entry and exit points is another highlight, allowing commuters to reach the KSR Railway Station quickly, even during peak hours. Underpasses near the Tumakuru-Bengaluru railway line further ensure seamless access from both sides of the station.
Benefits for Bengaluru
The Okalipuram signal-free corridor is a landmark development in urban mobility for Bengaluru. Commuters will benefit from reduced travel times, better connectivity, and easier access to key locations like the KSR Railway Station. The collaboration between BBMP and the Railway Department, which contributed ₹80 crore for the underbridges, highlights the importance of joint efforts in solving urban challenges.
As this major project nears completion, it sets an example for tackling traffic issues in other parts of the city. Residents eagerly anticipate the corridor's full inauguration, which promises to transform one of Bengaluru's busiest junctions and improve the quality of life for its commuters.
