Bengaluru, the bustling Silicon City of India, is preparing for an unusually cold weekend as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a sharp dip in temperatures. The city is expected to record its lowest minimum temperature in a decade, around 10.2 degrees Celsius, significantly below the January average of 15.8 degrees Celsius. This cold spell is part of a broader weather phenomenon, with a cold wave sweeping across northern India affecting temperatures in Karnataka.

A Rare Weather Event for Bengaluru
Bengaluru has experienced cold winters in the past, but this weekend's forecast stands out. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the city was 7.8 degrees Celsius on January 13, 1884. More recently, the city experienced lows of 12 degrees Celsius on January 16, 2012, and 12.3 degrees Celsius on January 15, 2019. However, the anticipated dip to 10-12.5 degrees Celsius this weekend is well below the usual range for this time of year.
Just a day before the forecast, Bengaluru recorded a minimum temperature of 16.7 degrees Celsius, making the upcoming drop even more notable.
Reasons Behind the Cold Spell
The IMD attributes this unusual chill to the cold wave impacting northern states like Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand, where snowfall has been widespread. This weather pattern has pushed cold air towards southern regions, including Karnataka.
The IMD report highlights, "Minimum temperatures are likely to fall by 2°C over Interior Karnataka for the next two days, with no large change thereafter. Coastal Karnataka, however, will not see significant changes in minimum temperatures."
Additionally, the IMD predicts early morning fog or mist in some parts of Bengaluru, with maximum and minimum temperatures likely around 27°C and 15°C, respectively, during the weekend.

Bengaluru Residents Brace for the Cold
For Bengaluru residents, this weather is a reminder of the city's rare but impactful dips in temperature. Known for its generally pleasant climate, the city occasionally experiences significant weather changes, as this weekend's forecast demonstrates.
The IMD's predictions have raised awareness among locals to prepare for the chilly days ahead. As Bengaluru gears up for this exceptional cold spell, it serves as a testament to the city's vulnerability to unexpected weather shifts, making this weekend one to remember in its weather history.
