Bengaluru is set to witness a major transformation in its transport system with the introduction of a 32.15 km road-metro corridor connecting J P Nagar to Hebbal. This ambitious project aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve road conditions in one of the city's busiest routes. The corridor will include Bengaluru's longest flyover, inspired by the existing double-decker flyover between Ragigudda and Silk Board.

Project Details and Cost
The project covers an 8 km stretch on Magadi Road and is estimated to cost Rs 9,800 crore. During a recent site inspection at Hebbal, BEL Road, Summanahalli, and Goraguntepalya junction, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the use of elevated roads parallel to metro lines. This method will help avoid land acquisition issues and reduce construction costs, making the project more efficient.
Double-Decker Metro Extension in Namma Metro Phase 3
The Karnataka government is also considering double-decker metro designs for Phase 3 of the Namma Metro project, which spans 40 km. A feasibility study for this metro extension is nearly complete, though some design changes have delayed the tendering process. The central government approved the metro extension in August 2023, making it a key part of Bengaluru's expanding metro network.
Changes in Metro Line Design
One of the major changes in the metro project is the redesign of the JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura stretch, especially near Goraguntepalya. Instead of an interchange station at Peenya, a new metro station will be built at Goraguntepalya, reducing costs and shortening the metro line by 300 meters. Travelators will be installed to improve passenger movement between Peenya and Goraguntepalya stations.
Expected Benefits
Although these changes may cause temporary challenges, they are expected to reduce congestion at Goraguntepalya, particularly between Dr. Rajkumar Memorial and BEL Circle. The new double-decker corridor will create a signal-free route, eliminating the need for detours. To complete the project, the government will acquire land from the Defence Ministry and the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute.
A Game-Changer for Bengaluru's Transport
Deputy CM Shivakumar has called the road-metro corridor a "game-changer" for the city. This project aims to enhance urban mobility, improve public transport, and provide a long-term solution to Bengaluru's traffic problems. Once completed, it will mark a significant step towards sustainable and efficient urban transportation.
