Bengaluru Reports 1st Case of HMPV

While it remains unclear if this strain is linked to the rising HMPV cases in China, the Indian Health Ministry has reassured the public of its readiness to tackle respiratory illnesses. The ministry emphasized robust surveillance and close monitoring of the situation to prevent further spread.

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a respiratory virus that often causes symptoms similar to the common cold. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it can lead to respiratory diseases, particularly in children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems. Symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.

The virus, first identified in 2001, spreads through direct contact, respiratory droplets, or contaminated surfaces. Studies show that most individuals encounter HMPV by the age of five, though the majority of cases are mild.
