In a major step for Bengaluru's public transport system, the Karnataka government has approved the construction of a new metro line connecting Sarjapur to Hebbal. Known as the "Red Line," this 36.59 km metro route is part of Phase-3 of the Bangalore Metro Rail Project. Aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity, the project is estimated to cost ₹28,405 crore and reflects the growing need for efficient urban transport solutions in the city.

The Red Line will address Bengaluru's notorious traffic woes, offering a faster and more convenient alternative to road travel. With the city's population rapidly increasing, this project is expected to ease daily commutes for thousands of residents while preparing the city for future transit demands.
Key Features of the Red Line
The metro line will include 22.14 km of elevated tracks with 17 stations and 14.45 km of underground routes featuring 11 stations. The construction cost is projected at ₹776 crore per kilometer, showcasing the government's commitment to transforming urban mobility.
To enhance accessibility, the line will include five key interchange stations at Ibbalur, Agara, Dairy Circle, KR Circle, and Hebbal. These strategic locations will connect the Red Line with other metro routes, making it easier for passengers to navigate the city.
Strategic Route and Connectivity
The metro line will pass through vital areas, including Sarjapur and Kada Agrahara Road, linking important residential, commercial, and business hubs. By offering seamless metro connectivity, the project aims to encourage public transport use, reducing dependence on road travel and helping alleviate traffic on Bengaluru's congested streets.
Timeline and Future Plans
Having received cabinet approval, the project is awaiting the central government's clearance, expected within the next year. Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with completion targeted for 2031. Once operational, the Red Line will be a significant addition to Bengaluru's metro network, currently spanning 258 km, making it one of India's largest urban transit systems.
The approval of the Sarjapur-Hebbal Red Line is a milestone in Bengaluru's journey toward sustainable and efficient public transport. This initiative not only promises smoother commutes but also contributes to the city's long-term development goals. As Bengaluru grows, projects like the Red Line will play a vital role in shaping a modern, connected city.
