Bengaluru Metro's Purple Line Expands, Easing Commutes Across the City
Bengaluru's metro system reached a significant milestone as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) introduced two new sections on the Purple Line. This expansion allows for a more seamless commute across the city, connecting previously isolated areas.

The two newly opened sections are Baiyappanahalli to KR Pura, spanning 2.1 kilometers, and Kengeri to Challaghatta, covering 2.05 kilometers. These sections complete the East-West Purple Line, stretching from Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Challaghatta, covering a total length of 43.49 kilometers and featuring 37 metro stations.
The city's operational metro network has now grown from 69.66 kilometers to 73.81 kilometers, making it the second-largest metro line in India after Delhi's 350-kilometer system.
What's remarkable about this expansion is that it occurred without the traditional fanfare of a formal inauguration or VIP presence. BMRCL decided to open these sections due to mounting pressure from regular metro users and the public who wanted immediate access.
The Baiyappanahalli-KR Pura section received clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) on September 25, while the Kengeri-Challaghatta section was cleared on September 30.
The Purple Line's introduction between KR Pura and BYPL (Byappanahalli) cost approximately ₹363.48 crores and extends connectivity to Whitefield. This line now provides an affordable and efficient travel option for Bengalureans. For just ₹60, residents can enjoy a comfortable 42.5-kilometer journey that takes roughly 60 to 80 minutes from end to end.
The increased connectivity is expected to have a significant impact on the city's traffic dynamics, particularly in the east-west corridor. With two major metro lines covering extensive areas of Bengaluru, public transport becomes a more attractive option for residents.
The BMRCL anticipates a substantial increase in metro ridership, estimating that it will rise by 75,000 to 80,000 passengers once the entire Purple Line becomes operational.

Here are some key details for commuters:
Purple Line Frequency:
Peak Hours
- Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Pattandur Agrahara: 10 minutes
- Pattandur Agrahara to Mysuru Road: 5 minutes
- Majestic to MG Road: 3 minutes (only during morning peak hours)
- Mysuru Road to Challaghatta: 10 minutes
Non-Peak Hours: 15 minutes during the early morning hours and 8-10 minutes during other non-peak hours.
Service Timings: Train services will commence at 5 am from all stations. The last train departing from Whitefield (Kadugodi) will be at 10.45 pm, and from other terminal stations, it will be at 11.05 pm.
Moreover, to further enhance accessibility, BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation) has introduced new metro feeder bus services, primarily serving the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the East Bengaluru IT corridor. These feeder services aim to make it more convenient for commuters to access the metro. The two new services are as follows:
1. KR Pura Metro Station to Silk Board: 22 Volvo buses per day will operate via ORR from 5.40 am to 10.30 pm, with a frequency of every few minutes.
2. KR Pura Metro Station to KR Pura Metro Station: 15 non-AC services will run every 5-10 minutes via Marathahalli, Kundalahalli, and Garudacharpalya.
This expansion not only connects previously isolated areas of Bengaluru but also offers residents a cost-effective and efficient mode of transportation, ultimately contributing to the city's sustainable growth and development.
