Bengaluru's Namma Metro has set a new record, with over 1.04 million passengers using the service in a single day.

This surge in ridership came after the launch of the Yellow Line, linking RV Road in Jayanagar to Bommasandra via Electronic City. According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), this is the highest daily ridership in the metro's history.
The newly opened Yellow Line is a major boost to the city's metro network, spanning 19.143 km and connecting key commercial hubs and IT corridors, thereby enhancing citywide accessibility. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the line is expected to serve over 800,000 commuters in South Bengaluru every day.
Metro Network Expansion
The launch of the Yellow Line has extended Bengaluru's metro network to a total of 96 km. This development forms part of Phase 2 of the metro project, constructed at a cost of ₹7,160 crore. Comprising 16 stations, the new line is designed to ease traffic congestion in the city's southern regions.
On its first day of operations, the Yellow Line registered 52,215 passengers. In comparison, the Purple Line carried 451,816 commuters, while the Green Line recorded 291,677 riders. Interchange stations also saw significant activity, with 252,323 passengers making transfers.
Impact on Daily Commuting
The previous record for highest metro ridership was set on June 4, when 966,732 passengers traveled during celebrations for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. At that time, only the Purple and Green Lines were operational. With the addition of the Yellow Line, daily passenger numbers have seen a remarkable surge.
A senior BMRCL official stated that expanding the metro network to 96 km marks a major milestone in Bengaluru's public transport system. The official credited Monday's spike in ridership to the much-anticipated launch of the new corridor.
Future Ridership Expectations
BMRCL estimates that daily metro ridership could soon climb to 1.25 million as more people opt for this fast and reliable mode of transport. The enhanced connectivity offered by the Yellow Line is expected to play a key role in achieving this target.
Commuters have largely welcomed the new line, appreciating its convenience and efficiency, though a few have expressed concerns about train frequency on the route.
This development marks a major step forward for Bengaluru's public transport network. With more residents embracing metro travel, the city is likely to see reduced traffic congestion and improved urban mobility in the coming years.
