New Update: Extending the Journey: Bengaluru-Mangaluru Express to Murdeshwar
The South Western Railway (SWR) has granted the wish of many by extending the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Central-Bengaluru overnight express train to Murdeshwar, a revered pilgrimage and tourist spot in coastal Karnataka. This addition, spanning 137 kilometers, will bring the train into Murdeshwar by 8:15 a.m., and the return journey from Murdeshwar to Bengaluru will commence at 6:45 p.m., reaching its destination the following morning.

A Long-Awaited Extension
This significant extension was officially declared by the SWR on December 23, 2023, in response to the persistent demands of the people of Mysuru and coastal Karnataka. This extension fosters direct connectivity between Mysuru and Murdeshwar, as well as other significant stops along the route, including Hassan, Sakleshpur, Subrahmanya, Mangaluru, Udupi, Kundapura, Bhatkal, and Byndoor.
Connecting Regions and Enriching Experiences
This extension is not only a boon for the local passengers but also a delightful opportunity for those traveling from Bengaluru and Mangaluru. Now, they can embark on a journey to Murdeshwar, reveling in its captivating landscapes and spiritual significance. Murdeshwar is renowned for its Shiva temple and boasts the world's second tallest statue of Lord Shiva, standing at a towering 123 feet. The town offers a breathtaking panorama of the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats.
All Aboard the Extended Bengaluru-Mangaluru Express
The train comprises 18 coaches, including one AC 2-tier, two AC 3-tier, seven sleeper class, six general second class, and two luggage-cum-brake vans. With a total of 1,008 seats, of which 144 are reserved for AC classes and 864 for non-AC classes², passengers have multiple options. For the AC 2-tier journey from Bengaluru to Murdeshwar, the fare is ₹1,230, while the sleeper class ticket is priced at ₹415.

The Inaugural Journey
SWR General Manager Ajay Kumar Singh flagged off this auspicious extension at Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVBT), Byappanahalli, in Bengaluru on December 24, 2023. The inaugural special train embarked on its journey from Bengaluru at 8 p.m. and arrived in Murdeshwar at 8 a.m. the following day. Regular services commenced on December 25, 2023.
Joy and Gratitude
The announcement of this extension has been met with overwhelming joy from the residents of Mysuru and coastal Karnataka. They express their heartfelt gratitude to SWR and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for heeding their long-standing request. Furthermore, they have called upon SWR to increase the train's frequency from six days a week to daily and contemplate further extensions to destinations like Karwar or Vasco-da-Gama in Goa.
