Bengaluru Devanahalli Toll Plaza Sets Revenue Record with Crores in Collection; Check How Much

The financial year 2023-24 marked a milestone for Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) near Bengaluru, which achieved record-breaking growth in passenger and cargo traffic. Alongside, toll plazas in the region also reported significant revenue increases, reflecting the growing demand for connectivity and infrastructure in Karnataka.

Bengaluru Devanahalli Toll Plaza Record

KIA handled an impressive 37.53 million passengers during the year, with 32.86 million domestic travelers and 4.67 million international visitors. This was a substantial rise from 31.91 million passengers in FY23. Cargo operations also reached new heights, with 439,524 metric tonnes handled. These numbers highlight the airport's crucial role in the region's connectivity and economy.

Meanwhile, the Devanahalli toll plaza on NH 44, which connects Bengaluru to the airport, recorded a remarkable toll revenue of ₹308.01 crore in FY24. This figure is the highest among Karnataka's 42 toll plazas over the past decade, showcasing a sharp rise from ₹125.75 crore collected in 2014-15. The Bengaluru-Nelamangala toll plaza also saw significant growth, collecting ₹103.41 crore, up from ₹59.31 crore a decade ago. These figures demonstrate the increasing vehicular traffic in the region and the vital role of toll revenues in funding infrastructure projects.

The rising toll collections have sparked debates on transparency and fairness. The Karnataka State Travel Operators' Association (KSTOA) has called for detailed reports on toll revenue utilization. Radhakrishna Holla, president of KSTOA, suggested developing an alternative route through areas like Hennur and Bagalur to accommodate the increasing traffic. Frequent travelers, like Mahesh Rao, have also voiced concerns over high toll charges and lack of clarity on how the funds are used.

Traffic expert M.N. Srihari highlighted that the high toll revenues reflect growing urban sprawl and connectivity needs around Bengaluru. He emphasized the importance of balancing revenue collection with public trust by ensuring fair toll practices and providing toll-free access after concession periods.

The Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, featuring Kaniminike and Sheshagirihalli toll plazas, generated ₹180 crore in tolls during FY24. The expressway has reduced travel time between the two cities to just 90 minutes, significantly boosting vehicle movement and toll revenue. This and other infrastructure improvements underscore the region's growing economic activities and demand for better connectivity.

The record growth in traffic and revenue at KIA and nearby toll plazas reflects Karnataka's infrastructure development and urban expansion. Ensuring transparency and addressing public concerns will be crucial in maintaining trust while driving further growth.
