Karnataka is set to revolutionize its rail connectivity with the launch of its first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper train. This new service will connect Bengaluru and Belagavi, offering a faster and more comfortable travel option for passengers. Union Minister V. Somanna announced that the train would begin operations next month, signaling a major step forward for the state's transportation infrastructure.

A Boost for Rail Connectivity
The announcement was made during a press conference in Belagavi, where Somanna emphasized the importance of improving rail services in the region. He also highlighted plans for a new railway line connecting Belagavi to Dharwad via Kittur, calling it the dream project of the late Suresh Angadi, a former minister and prominent advocate for regional development.
This proposed railway line, spanning 73 kilometers between Desur in Belagavi and Kyarakoppa in Dharwad, is expected to reduce travel time by over an hour. The improved connectivity will significantly benefit daily commuters and travelers, enhancing convenience across the region.
Progress on Key Projects
Efforts are already underway to make these projects a reality. During a recent meeting with railway officials at the Belagavi District Commissioner's office, Somanna reviewed the progress of ongoing projects. A major focus was on land acquisition for the Belagavi-Dharwad railway line. The project requires 888 acres of land-600 acres in Belagavi and 228 acres in Dharwad.
Belagavi District Commissioner Mohammad Roshan assured that 444 acres of land would be handed over by next month. The goal is to complete submissions by January 25 or 26, accelerating the project's timeline. In Dharwad, land acquisition is also progressing, although a 42-acre section remains challenging. The state government is working hard to resolve this issue promptly.
Infrastructure Enhancements
In addition to the sleeper train and new railway line, the government is prioritizing local infrastructure improvements. Plans for five Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and one Road Under Bridge (RUB) in Belagavi district are in the works. These projects aim to enhance safety and streamline connectivity for residents.
The ticket prices for the first sleeper Vande Bharat trains are expected to be on par with Rajdhani Express fares. Here are the approximate prices for different classes:
AC 3 Tier: ₹3200-3400
AC 2 Tier: ₹4400-4500
First Class AC: ₹5400-5500
Future Prospects
Currently, Karnataka already benefits from the operational Pune-Belagavi Vande Bharat train. However, the upcoming sleeper service will be the state's first, further elevating travel experiences between Bengaluru and Belagavi.
This development marks a significant milestone in Karnataka's transportation evolution. With enhanced rail services and ambitious infrastructure projects, residents can look forward to improved connectivity, reduced travel times, and a smoother travel experience in the near future.
