Bengaluru Launches Driverless Trains on Airport Blue and Pink Lines with CBTC Tech

Bengaluru Metro's Driverless Trains

Recently, BEML Ltd rolled out a prototype of an advanced driverless Metro train, called the 5RS-DM. The train has been developed for Namma Metro's upcoming Phase 2, 2A, and 2B corridors. The prototype was officially unveiled by Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) Managing Director J. Ravishankar, and a test run of the train was also demonstrated at the event.

Key Features of Bengaluru's New Train

The key feature of this new Metro train is its ability to run without a driver. This is made possible through communication-based train control (CBTC) technology. CBTC allows trains to communicate continuously with the control system, helping manage speed, distance between trains, scheduling, and safety with high accuracy, all without the need for a driver inside the cab.

Safety has been given top priority in the design. The trains meet strict international standards for fire safety and crash protection. Along with advanced technology, passenger comfort is also a focus. The trainsets use energy-efficient systems and offer modern facilities, including clear passenger information displays, comfortable seating, and improved accessibility for all commuters. Passengers will also benefit from wide gangways between coaches, making it easier to move through the train, as well as USB charging ports for electronic devices.

BEML's Contract

BEML is supplying these trainsets as part of a large contract worth Rs 3,177 crore, with all design and engineering work carried out at its Bengaluru facility. Under the agreement, BEML will provide 318 Metro cars for the airport and pink lines, with the total rising to 396 due to additional orders. After testing and commissioning, BEML will also maintain the trains for up to 15 years.

Once operational, these driverless trains are expected to make Metro travel in Bengaluru faster, safer, and more efficient, especially on key routes connecting the city to the airport and across north and south Bengaluru.
