Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru Gears Up for Leopard Safari Launch

Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), Bengaluru is buzzing with anticipation as the long-awaited leopard safari inches closer to becoming a reality. Minister Eshwar Khandre, responsible for Forest, Environment, and Ecology, has given the go-ahead to forest department and zoo management officials to kickstart the leopard safari, aligning its introduction with the existing lion and tiger safaris.

Sources within the department reveal that the launch timeline is contingent upon the successful bonding and training of the animals. Officials shared insights, indicating, "Pending any unforeseen challenges, the safari could welcome the public in about a month and a half. However, should the model code of conduct be enforced, the opening might be postponed until May or after the code of conduct is lifted."

Covering an expansive 20-hectare area, BBP has designated a carefully designed enclosure for the leopard safari. The enclosure features high-rise mesh and strategically placed fences to prevent potential animal escapes, addressing the agility and cunning nature of leopards. The design meticulously eliminates escape routes, ensuring the safety of both the animals and visitors.

Currently housing around 12 leopards, the safari area has the capacity for 20. Officials are gradually introducing the animals to help them acclimate and prevent conflicts. All leopards earmarked for display are under one year of age, having been hand-reared in the zoo after rescue within their first two months of life. BBP records indicate a total of 70 leopards, 19 tigers, and 19 lions within the zoo.

In a recent meeting with forest department officials, Minister Khandre underscored the importance of hiring additional staff, including temporary workers, to facilitate the smooth functioning of the safari. He directed officials to prioritize timely wage payments to all staff members, including those in special task forces.

The imminent launch of the leopard safari adds a new layer of excitement to BBP's diverse wildlife offerings. Nature enthusiasts, families, and visitors can soon look forward to witnessing these majestic creatures in a carefully curated and secure environment. The introduction of the leopard safari not only enhances the zoo's appeal but also contributes to its conservation and educational endeavors.
