Bengaluru Hit By Early Cold: Experts Predict Harsher Winter, Rainfall, Chill Days Ahead

Bengaluru and several districts in Karnataka are feeling the winter chill earlier than expected this year. Temperatures in northern districts like Bidar and Vijayapura have dropped to around 12 degrees Celsius, much lower than what is usually seen at this time. Bengaluru, too, is experiencing cold mornings and evenings, with temperatures dipping to 15-16 degrees Celsius. These early cold spells have led many to wonder if a harsher winter is on the way.

Bengaluru Hit By Early Cold

Weather experts believe temperatures will drop even further in the coming weeks. CS Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, predicts that the city's minimum temperatures could fall to 12-14 degrees Celsius. In northern districts like Bidar, temperatures might even drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Such predictions suggest that Karnataka could experience an unusually cold winter this year.

What's Behind the Chill?

The sudden drop in temperatures can be traced to several factors. Meteorologists point to La Niña, a weather phenomenon that causes cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, as one of the reasons. Another factor is the abundant monsoon rainfall Karnataka received this year. The excess moisture in reservoirs, lakes, and fields adds to the chill in the air, making the weather feel colder.

Official Arrival of Winter

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has specific criteria for declaring the official start of winter. In Bengaluru, this includes maximum temperatures falling to 23-24 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures dropping below 16 degrees Celsius. While the current temperatures are low, they haven't yet met these official benchmarks.

What Lies Ahead?

Srinivas Reddy, former director of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, notes that Bengaluru's winter season typically lasts from December to early February. However, the earlier-than-usual drop in temperatures this year suggests a longer and potentially harsher winter.

Karnataka is clearly gearing up for a chillier winter than usual. Whether it's the impact of La Niña or the lingering effects of a heavy monsoon, residents should brace for colder days ahead. From cozy sweaters to warm beverages, it might be time to get winter-ready sooner than expected.
