Ayodhya Aims to Shine as India's First Solar City Ahead of Ram Temple Consecration
As the much-anticipated consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya approaches, significant strides are being made to transform the sacred city into Uttar Pradesh's inaugural "solar city."

This groundbreaking initiative is under the supervision of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Department (UPNEDA) and has garnered the personal attention of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The extensive project envisions the creation of a solar park along the serene banks of the Saryu River, offering solar-powered boats for eco-friendly transportation. Furthermore, the endeavor includes the installation of solar streetlights, the incorporation of solar energy sources in public transport, the provision of solar-powered amenities like mobile charging points at public spaces, the electrification of government buildings through solar energy, and the enhancement of solar power utilization for domestic consumption.
A High-Profile Event on the Horizon
The proposed transformation is taking place in preparation for the "pran pratishtha (consecration)" ceremony of the Ram temple, expected to be held on January 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and approximately 10,000 distinguished guests from across the nation are anticipated to attend this significant event, as reported by PTI.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's Vision
In May, after personally inspecting the solar electrification work in Ayodhya, Chief Minister Adityanath expressed his vision, stating, "Ayodhya is the capital of Suryavansh. So, here, electricity will come not from other sources but from renewable solar energy."
Uttar Pradesh's Ambitious Solar Energy Policy 2022
This transformation aligns seamlessly with Uttar Pradesh's ambitious Solar Energy Policy 2022. Notably, a crucial element of this policy is the development of 16 municipal corporations, including Noida, as "solar cities."
Radiant Paths and Solar Trees
Ayodhya's renowned Ram Path, a 12.9-kilometer, six-lane road that leads to the temple from Sahadatganj on the Lucknow-Ayodhya National Highway up to the Lata Mangeshkar Chowk in the Nayaghat area, will be adorned with solar streetlights. To further enhance the city's luminance, 800 solar streetlights have already been installed.
As an innovative facet of the solar transformation, the city will feature 40 solar trees, including 1 kW and 2.5 kW capacity variants, set up at various locations. These solar trees will consist of branch-like structures adorned with LED lights, offering both shade and functional elements, such as installation above drinking water kiosks or benches, as confirmed by officials.
A Sustainable Future for Electric Vehicles and Farmers
In support of electric vehicles (EVs), UPNEDA is in the process of establishing two solar-powered EV charging stations. To bolster agricultural practices, a six-metric-ton solar cold storage facility is being installed at the mandi, facilitating farmers in preserving their produce effectively.
Ayodhya's transformation into a "solar city" is a testament to the city's dedication to sustainable energy and environmental responsibility as it prepares for the momentous consecration of the Ram temple. This forward-thinking initiative not only embodies the region's cultural and spiritual significance but also positions Ayodhya as a torchbearer in renewable energy adoption.
