Assam to Arunachal: Centre Approves New 2-Lane Highway Project; Route Details Inside

India's government has approved a major road improvement project in Assam, which will help connect the state more efficiently with Arunachal Pradesh. The project focuses on upgrading NH-115 from a simple 2-lane road to a 2-lane road with a paved shoulder. This upgraded stretch will run from Islampur near the Dhola-Sadiya bridge to the Border Outpost at Shantipur in Tinsukia District. It is expected to be completed by the year 2025-26.

Assam s NH-115 to be Upgraded

Improved funding and planning

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has approved a budget of Rs. 50.43 crore for this project. This amount also includes agency fees and other related costs. The budget approval came after the Chief Engineer (NH), PWD, Assam, submitted a proposal on February 5, 2025. For the financial year 2024-25, Rs. 48.80 crore has been set aside mainly for pre-construction activities.

Focus on connectivity and safety

This upgradation is not just about a better road surface-it also aims to improve road safety and provide smoother transportation between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The work will be done under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode. This means the project will follow strict technical rules and high-quality standards, as mentioned in the official work sanction letter. The goal is to make travel safer, more comfortable, and faster for both people and goods.

Careful financial planning

The financial plan for this project has been designed in phases. Most of the money will be used in the first phase for pre-construction work. A smaller amount, Rs. 1.17 crore, has been reserved for road maintenance from 2026 to 2029. This thoughtful financial structure ensures that the road not only gets built properly but also stays in good condition for years.

A step towards northeast development

The NH-115 project highlights how important this road is for the northeast region of India. It will greatly improve access between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, helping both states grow together. The government's investment in this project shows its dedication to improving roads and transport in the northeast, an area that often faces connectivity issues due to difficult terrain.

The funding for the year 2024-25 will come from NH(O)-NE, under Demand No. 86 of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. This confirms how serious the government is about supporting the region's progress.

Upgrading NH-115 is a big step towards safer and faster travel in the northeast. It shows strong planning, smart use of funds, and a clear goal-to connect people better and support regional development.
