An American Airlines has made a significant change to its pet policy, aiming to make air travel more affordable and convenient for pet owners. The airline now allows passengers to carry a full-size carry-on bag in addition to their pet in the cabin. This is a shift from the previous regulation where travelers were limited to just one small personal item if they were flying with a pet, for which they were charged a $150 fee. This update comes as a welcome development for pet owners who felt the previous policy was unjust, given the additional costs involved.

The decision to update the pet policy was influenced by feedback from passengers who found the old rules to be financially burdensome and logistically challenging. Previously, pet owners had to choose between checking in a larger carry-on bag for a $35 fee or placing their pet in the cargo hold, as reported by the Associated Press. This change not only makes flying with pets less costly but also more straightforward and stress-free.
Gary Leff, a travel blogger, expressed his enthusiasm for the policy revision. He shared his past frustrations when flying with his Yorkshire terrier, noting the inconvenience of the pet being considered as a carry-on despite paying a significant pet fee. Leff believes that this update will also discourage passengers from mislabeling their pets as service animals to bypass the fee.
An American Airlines spokesperson highlighted that the policy update aims to enhance the travel experience for pet-owning customers. This development aligns with the airline's customer-centric approach, especially following the recent announcement of increased baggage fees. The cost of checking in a bag on an American Airlines domestic flight has risen to $35 for online check-ins, up from $30, and $40 for airport check-ins, up from $35. The fee for checking a second bag has also increased to $45.
This policy change by American Airlines marks a significant improvement in the way pets and their owners are accommodated on flights, making the journey more enjoyable and less financially taxing for those involved. It's clear that the airline is taking steps to address the concerns of its passengers, ensuring a more pleasant and inclusive flying experience for all, including our furry friends.
